    • Construction starts on the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre's $3.3 million upgrade
    • Expected completion mid-2017

A $3.3 million upgrade to the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre has begun with Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies today inspecting construction activity.

The upgrade has been made possible by a $1.25 million grant to the Shire of Broome through the Liberal National Government's Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF). The shire will contribute the remaining funding.

Ms Davies said a complete rebuild of the centre's plant room and replacement of the filtration system would increase the capacity and efficiency of the pool, resulting in financial, environmental and health benefits for the Broome community.

"A new concourse and tiling for the pool and surrounding wet area will also improve the visual amenity of the facility," she said.

"Other upgrades include renewing the swimming pool bulk heads, resurfacing the pebblecrete children's lagoon and improving pool lighting.

"We know that when people are active, not only does it benefit their physical health, but it benefits their mental health too and helps keep them connected to the community.

"The refurbishment will allow the shire to provide activities year-round and encourage more people to use the facilities during the cooler months."

The Minister said the CSRFF, which had funded more than 1,000 projects across Western Australia worth $157 million since 2008, had a direct benefit to participation in community and grassroots sport and recreation.

"This is a valuable grants program because providing sporting facilities all across WA encourages people of all ages and abilities to be active," she said.
