    • 52 West Australians presented with WA Volunteer Service Awards for 25 or more years of service to a single organisation

More than 50 people who have collectively given over 2,000 years to volunteering have been acknowledged at an event at the Constitutional Centre today.

The WA Volunteer Service Awards were introduced by the Liberal National Government in 2011 and recognise volunteers who have provided 25 or more and 50 or more years of service to one organisation.

Presenting the 25-year awards to 52 recipients, Seniors and Volunteering Minister Paul Miles said it was important to recognise the valuable and ongoing contribution made by volunteers in Western Australian communities.

"I commend all the volunteers for their outstanding contributions over many years to their organisations and to the community," Mr Miles said.

"Without volunteers, some organisations simply would not be able to provide services needed to support some of our most vulnerable citizens.

"I hope this recognition goes some way to showing our gratitude for the service given over many years."

Among the recipients was Margaret Lay who has volunteered for 38 years at King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH).  Together with a group of 300 volunteers, Margaret would put together baby packages to comfort and support families through the perinatal loss service and about 700 packages a year for parents in need.

"Margaret started volunteering at KEMH after her family experienced a stillbirth and over three decades has provided immeasurable support to mothers and families at the hospital," the Minister said.
