    • Perth artist Stuart Green selected to reinterpret Midland's industrial rail history

The Liberal National Government's renaissance of Midland continues with Planning Minister Donna Faragher today announcing the appointment of a works contractor and public artist for the Railway Square public open space.

Mrs Faragher also called for expressions of interest from event agencies and commercial operators looking to use the workshops space.

MG Group will start work next month to create the new $7 million Railway Square public open space, with alfresco areas due next year as buildings around the square are completed.

Phase one of the Railway Square public open space works program is due to be complete in time for the 2017 Anzac Day commemorations.

The Minister said the State Government and private investment in Midland was creating jobs and business opportunities with three developers working on a new hotel, residential and retail spaces, along with future plans to undertake work on the gatehouse and timekeepers cottage.

"Over the past decade, Midland has gone through an incredible transformation attracting significant investment to the area and creating places for residents and visitors to relax, socialise and enjoy quality entertainment," she said.

"Millions of dollars are being invested by the Government and private developers to make this area of Midland more accessible and provide enviable public spaces and amenities."

The local community, events sector and commercial operators have shown keen interest in the iconic workshops site and can now submit expressions of interest in relation to three venues within the precinct - Block 2, the Powerhouse and Railway Square.

"Steeped in industrial heritage, Block 2 and the Powerhouse are striking venues that could be used for corporate functions, weddings, film-site locations or commercial operations," she said.

"The Government is seeking new and exciting entertainment, leisure, art, music and food and beverage operators to transform the precinct into the cultural heart of Midland."

Mrs Faragher also announced Stuart Green as the principal artist for Railway Square.

"He is the mastermind behind some of Perth's most striking public artworks created in recent years and will work with the project team to reinterpret and celebrate the rail history of the area via an integrated art installation throughout Railway Square," she said.
