    • Semi-finalists for WA Innovator of the Year announced
    • Groundbreaking ideas include 3D robotic bricklaying system

The world's first fully automated 3D robotic bricklaying system is one of the semi-finalists in this year's WA Innovator of the Year program announced today by Acting Innovation Minister Sean L'Estrange.

"It's fantastic to see such high-calibre innovative ideas among the semi-finalists, including groundbreaking projects such as the robotic bricklaying system and a device that helps in the revegetation of mine sites and degraded agricultural lands with natural flora," Mr L'Estrange said.

Also included among the semi-finalists is wi-fi technology opening up new data access options for global travellers, and a fully functional panel computer for rugged conditions to suit vehicles from small forklifts to big mining trucks.

"The range of applicants shows that Western Australia continues to be at the forefront of innovation and I congratulate all Innovator of the Year entrants," the Minister said.

Previous semi-finalists such as Bombora Wave Power are now preparing to deploy their wave technology in Europe and be commercially operational in the next year.  Previous growth category winner SEQTA has expanded its business significantly since its win and is a Western Region finalist in the EY Entrepreneur of the Year awards.

Another growth category winner, Scancam Industries, has achieved success and is currently scale-testing its licence-plate recognition technology in a bid to reduce fuel theft.  With a recorded 63 per cent reduction in fuel losses in WA, and $500,000 seed capital raised last year, Scancam is set to launch into the east coast soon.

The Liberal National Government recently announced a $20 million innovation package over four years to foster the sort of innovation and entrepreneurship promoted by the Innovator of the Year Program.

Finalists will be announced on July 26, 2016, with the winners revealed at an award ceremony on November 2, 2016.
