The Liberal National Government today launched an online pledge encouraging business, community organisations and individuals to support women's participation in science, technology, engineering, mathematics-oriented (STEM) careers and trades.

Deputy Premier and Training and Workforce Development and Women's Interests Minister Liza Harvey said encouraging more girls and women to consider careers in trades and STEM fields was a priority of the State Government.

"Through this online pledge, we are encouraging organisations and individuals to commit to supporting women in STEM and trades," Mrs Harvey said.

"With their support, we can increase the opportunities available to women in these traditionally male-dominated careers paths, and realise the business benefits of a more diverse workforce."

To promote the benefits of careers in STEM fields and trades, the Department of Local Government and Communities is partnering with TradeUP Australia on a stand at the Skills West Expo in August.

"Women are significantly under-represented in STEM and trades education and careers in Western Australia for various reasons, ranging from stereotyping or gender bias to the need for flexible work practices," the Minister said.

"Training and employing more women in these fields will address the gender imbalance and also has the ability to help the State alleviate skills shortages, increase productivity and fuel economic growth."

The Skills West stand will provide information on careers in STEM and trades and the opportunity to experience a number of trades firsthand.  Seminars will also be held from 12.30pm to 1.10pm at the event each day by organisations in STEM and trades fields on some of the different career opportunities available to girls and women.

Exhibitors of the Skills West Expo are encouraged to take the pledge to show their support for women considering undertaking careers in STEM and trades.
