The Liberal National Government has announced one of the world's greatest-ever tennis players, Roger Federer, is returning to Perth for the first time in 15 years to compete at Hopman Cup 2017.

Acting Premier and Tourism Minister Liza Harvey said in a major coup for Western Australia, the 17-time Grand Slam singles champion would represent Switzerland in the unique mixed-team competition at Perth Arena in January.

Mrs Harvey said the State Government was proud to be a major and founding sponsor of the Hopman Cup through Tourism Western Australia.

"We are thrilled that Roger Federer has chosen to start his 2017 season here in Perth," she said.

"The Hopman Cup has welcomed some of the biggest names in tennis over its 28-year history, and the 2017 line-up is off to a terrific start with one of the greatest players of all time."

Federer last competed at the Hopman Cup in 2002, with his now-wife Mirka, after winning the event as a 19-year-old in 2001 with Martina Hingis. His playing partner will be world number 16 Belinda Bencic.

"I expect Roger will notice significant changes in Perth since his last visit 15 years ago.  The city has truly come of age, and the visitation and international attention that the Hopman Cup generates will showcase this transformation," the Acting Premier said.

The State Government has sponsored the Hopman Cup since its inception in 1989.  The current sponsorship deal includes an option to continue for a further five years, securing the event for WA until 2022.

"Events such as the Hopman Cup form an important part of the Government's strategy to grow the value of tourism to $12 billion by 2020," Mrs Harvey said.

"More than 96,000 fans came to Perth Arena for this year's tournament, while millions of people worldwide saw the tennis action and sights of Western Australia on television and online.  The Liberal National Government is proud of WA's exciting and expanding events calendar."

All session and final tickets for Hopman Cup 2017 are available now.  The full player line-up will be announced in coming months.
