61 public primary schools to receive new playgrounds and shade sails
Up to $20,000 per school as part of a $7 million Liberal National Government program
Primary school students at 61 public schools around the State will soon have more reason to keep active and have fun during recess and lunch times.
Education Minister Peter Collier today announced the schools would share in $1 million of funding this year for new playgrounds and shade shelters.
Mr Collier, who today visited Weld Square Primary School in Morley, said encouraging students to be active was important in developing lifelong healthy habits.
"Children should be excited about moving around and being outdoors. Providing play spaces keeps them moving and helps their development and learning," he said.
"This funding will allow these schools to build more play areas, including nature playgrounds, as well as install shade structures."
Weld Square Primary School has a fun approach to keeping students active. The school has two outdoor ping pong tables as well as a giant chess board.
"The playground equipment at Weld Square Primary School is fantastic for the students but can't be used to its full capacity because the area isn't shaded," the Minister said.
"$20,000 will help the school to install the shade structure it needs for students to be active and play ping pong and chess throughout the year."
