$750,000 contract awarded to seal a section of Gibb River Road
Upgrade is part of reconstruction works on the popular tourist route
The Liberal National Government has committed $750,000 to sealing a section of the Gibb River Road near Derby, at the western end of the popular tourist drive.
During a visit to the Kimberley region today, Transport Minister Dean Nalder announced that a contract had been awarded to Bitumen Sealing Services Pty Ltd to carry out the works on a 10 kilometre section of the road which had recently been widened.
"Gibb River Road is one of the main attractions in the region, and has scenic views of geological formations and natural scenery, Aboriginal and pastoral history, as well as rare and unique flora and fauna," Mr Nalder said.
"The sealing works form part of the overall Gibb River Road reconstruction project which will provide the freight industry, tourists and the local community with improved safety and accessibility, particularly during the wet season.
"Undertaking the sealing works in a timely fashion ensures the durability of the reconstructed Gibb River Road."
The works, to be managed by Main Roads' Kimberley Region, will begin this month and are expected to be completed by June 2017.
