Minister for Justice Michael Keenan and Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett today announced that disaster assistance has been activated for communities affected by heavy rainfall and flooding in South West Western Australia between 19 and 27 March 2016.
The assistance is being provided to the affected local government areas through the jointly funded Commonwealth-state Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).
Mr Keenan said today's announcement reflected the ongoing commitment of the Australian and Western Australian governments to work together to ensure the long-term recovery of disaster affected communities.
"Under these arrangements, financial assistance for local and State Government authorities will be provided to restore damaged essential public assets," Mr Keenan said.
Mr Barnett said assistance was now available in 10 local government areas, including:
- Shire of Dalwallinu
- Shire of Chittering
- Shire of Lake Grace
- Shire of Narembeen
- Shire of Northam
- Shire of Perenjori
- Shire of Sandstone
- Shire of Victoria Plains
- Shire of Yalgoo
- Shire of York
"It is clear that heavy rainfall and flooding took its toll on local infrastructure in these regional areas and requires Commonwealth-State support to ensure communities are restored as quickly as possible," Mr Barnett said.
