- $35.5m State Government investment towards Carnarvon Community College
Carnarvon Community College is set to get new teaching blocks, administrative services and sporting facilities in preparation of the amalgamation of its kindergarten, primary and secondary schools, in a significant investment as part of the 2016-17 State Budget.
The $35.5 million construction project has received $29.5 million from the State Government's Royalties for Regions program and $6 million from the Department of Education.
Education Minister Peter Collier said works involved demolishing three classroom wings to build kindergarten, primary, secondary and specialist classroom blocks; canteen; extra parking; sewerage works; sports hall with associated amenities; and football oval and hard courts. Three classroom wings are expected to be demolished to ensure sufficient space for the new construction.
"This project is a significant milestone that will significantly contribute towards the development of the Carnarvon Community College," Mr Collier said.
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the investment would support the planned relocation of all secondary students from the old Carnarvon High School to the new Carnarvon Community College to establish a K-12 campus on one site.
Mr Redman said educational opportunities played an important role in supporting families to remain and move to regional Western Australia.
"Quality infrastructure in regional schools has a significant influence on student and staff retention and experience, and I am pleased to see Royalties for Regions make this possible for the growing Carnarvon community," he said.
"Improved educational outcomes lead to a highly skilled workforce that will contribute to the economic strength of regional WA. Royalties for Regions is building sustainable regional communities to ensure a brighter future for our next generation."
Treasurer Mike Nahan said the State Government would invest $3.78 billion over the next four years to build vibrant regions with strong economies through Royalties for Regions initiatives in health, community services, education, arts, Aboriginal development, agriculture, tourism and economic development.
