Extended retail trading hours for WA Day

    15/05/2016 6:00 AM

    • Normal 11am-5pm public holiday trading extended to 8am-6pm in Perth
    • More convenience for consumers, more freedom for retailers

Perth shoppers will enjoy four extra retail trading hours on the Western Australia Day public holiday on June 6, 2016, with general retail shops in the metropolitan area allowed to open from 8am to 6pm.

The same extended hours will also apply to the Queen's Birthday public holiday on September 26, 2016.

Commerce Minister Michael Mischin said the approval of extended trading for these public holidays was in line with the State Government's policy of gradually easing retail trading restrictions.

"For consumers, it means greater convenience, choice and flexibility when shopping on a public holiday.  For retailers, it means greater freedom to be able to cater for the demands of their customers," Mr Mischin said.

"The extended hours also allow shops to compete more effectively with online competitors.

"The Liberal National Government has been at the forefront of retail trading hours' reform, with late night weekday and Sunday trading proving to be popular with consumers and successful for businesses.

"A proposal to introduce earlier 7am openings on Monday to Saturday and 6pm closing on Saturday is currently before State Parliament.

"The Government is further committed to an earlier Sunday opening time of 9am if re-elected next year."
