Premier and Science Minister Colin Barnett today called for nominations for the 2016 Western Australian Science Hall of Fame.

"The hall of fame recognises the outstanding work of the State's scientists and our past winners demonstrate the impressive calibre of science talent we have in WA," Mr Barnett said.

"Members of the community are encouraged to nominate outstanding West Australians that are internationally renowned in their field and have a substantial track record as a scientist."

The Western Australian Hall of Fame was established in 2007 to recognise exceptional lifelong contributions from West Australians to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. An honour board was established by Scitech in 2008 to showcase the inductees and raise the profile of their achievements.

Honourees have included Professor Cheryl E Praeger AM, whose groundbreaking work included pioneering research into symmetry in graphical models; Emeritus Professor Alan Robson AO, whose early research on the mineral nutrition of plants and soil fertility contributed to the prosperity of farming communities; and Professor Lyn Beazley AO, former Western Australian Chief Scientist, who built up an internationally renowned research team that focused on recovery from brain damage.

"The Hall of Fame honour is reserved for the highest achievement and contribution to science in the State," the Premier said.

"It also recognises the important initiatives and activities that encourage community participation in science and inspire young people to pursue careers in science.  Providing opportunities to engage and educate children in science and turning young people towards science is vital for our future scientific capacity."

Inductees will be announced by the Premier at an awards ceremony on August 18, 2016 during National Science Week, Australia's largest annual celebration of science.
