    Perth Stadium art opportunities

    31/03/2016 8:00 AM
    • Two artworks to be selected for the Perth Stadium and Sports Precinct

Artists are being invited to register their interest for the final two artwork opportunities being advertised for Perth Stadium and the surrounding sports precinct.

Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies said the response to the first public art opportunity released in mid-2015 had been hugely positive with interest registered from Australia and around the world.

"One of the latest artwork opportunities will be a surface-mounted piece in the pedestrian underpass that links the Perth Stadium Station to the sports precinct," Ms Davies said.

"The second will be a large-scale artwork in the east of the sports precinct between the underpass and the eastern stadium entrance.  Both of these locations will enjoy lots of public exposure and foot traffic on event and non-event days."

Under the State Government's Percent for Art Scheme, more than $2 million has been allocated for public art across the Perth Stadium and Sports Precinct, which will house a mix of standalone statement sculptures plus integrated artworks once open in early 2018. The pieces will celebrate Western Australia's indigenous culture, landscape, history and community while responding to the themes of people, land and sport.

Transport Minister Dean Nalder encouraged artists to register their interest for this unique opportunity.

"The Percent for Art Scheme has already successfully delivered a range of artworks across the State including metropolitan train stations, most recently at Butler," Mr Nalder said.

"I'm sure the piece selected for Perth Stadium Station will further enhance the station design."

The artists selected will be appointed later this year and artwork will be in place ahead of the stadium opening in early 2018.

The procurement of these artworks is being managed by Westadium's builder Brookfield Multiplex, with the selection overseen by a panel of specialist advisers chaired by the director of the State Art Gallery and the Government Architect.
