    • Countdown timers at key intersections to improve pedestrian safety

The State Government has completed the roll-out of pedestrian countdown timers for this financial year ahead of schedule.

Transport Minister Dean Nalder said successful results from the initial trial of countdown timers in the busy CBD had led to the roll-out of more timers across the Perth metropolitan area.

"Knowing how many seconds are left on the timer means pedestrians can make more informed choices about crossing the road," Mr Nalder said.

"This is safer for pedestrians while also improving the intersection efficiency for motorists."

Efficiency of traffic signals form part of a planned strategic approach to deliver benefits and improved safety under Main Roads' Traffic Congestion Management Program.

The Minister said he was pleased with the progress of the program which was a new way of operating the network.

"Initiatives such as the pedestrian countdown timers; flashing yellow to turning traffic; yellow box junctions; new merge lines; and the traffic signal timing improvement project are relatively low cost while providing material improvements to traffic flow by using our current infrastructure more effectively," he said.

Further sites will be fitted with pedestrian countdown timers next financial year.
