More than 1,500 athletes competing in 2016 Australian Junior Athletics Championships
Selection for IAAF World U20 Championships up for grabs
Supported by State Government through Tourism WA
More than 1,500 of the nation's best young athletes have descended on Perth to compete in the 2016 Australian Junior Athletics Championships.
Tourism Minister Kim Hames said the championships were not only a great opportunity to celebrate Australia's future super stars of track and field, but provided a great boost to the Western Australian economy.
"Mass participation events such as the 2016 Australian Junior Athletics Championships are an important part of our events calendar because they bring thousands of competitors, their families, support crew and officials to the State," Dr Hames said.
"Perth last hosted the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in 2013 when the event attracted more than 4,000 visitors to WA and brought $3.8 million into the State."
The competition is the first of many mass participation events WA is hosting in 2016 including the World Masters Athletics Championships, UCI Gran Fondo World Series, Australian University Games, and the SunSmart Ironman Western Australia.
The Minister said these events were anticipated to attract more than 20,000 visitors and millions of dollars into the State which was great news for the economy and the tourism industry.
"The State Government is proud to support the 2016 Australian Junior Athletics Championships through Tourism WA," he said.
"Tourism is a vital industry for WA because it generates 94,000 jobs and $8.9 billion in visitor spend a year.
"The Government has a strategy to increase visitor spend to $12 billion by 2020.
"Events such as 2016 Australian Junior Athletics Championships form an important part of this strategy.''
The 2016 Australian Junior Athletics Championships will be held at the WA Athletics Stadium from March 8 until March 13
Athletes will also be vying for selection to the Australian Spark team which will compete at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland in July
