    26/02/2016 4:45 PM
    • $3 million to the Yawuru native title holders to build a community hub to foster social and cultural activity
    • The Yawuru people are native title holders for land in and around Broome
    • Stage one construction is under way

Aboriginal Affairs Minister Peter Collier today presented the Yawuru native title holders with a Lotterywest grant of $3 million towards the construction and fit-out of new community facilities in Broome.

The Liyan-Ngan Nyirrwa project is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at providing long-term social, cultural and economic security to Yawuru and other Aboriginal people in Broome.

The proposed community centre includes social enterprises, community development initiatives, heritage development and research projects, and a community gathering facility.

The Lotterywest-supported development will house a multipurpose hall; language centre; outdoor gathering, activity and cultural healing spaces; and an art workspace and exhibition areas.

The Minister acknowledged the hard work of the traditional owners in developing a strong plan aimed at securing Yawuru culture and increasing economic participation.

"Connection to land and culture is integral to Aboriginal peoples' sense of identity," he said.

"The community centre will be a place where local Aboriginal people young and old can come together to learn, share, teach, cook and work.

"It is important young Aboriginal people remain strongly connected to their culture, and this community hub will be central to that in years to come."
