Support for grains biosecurity R&D projects

    • $700,000 in Biosecurity Research and Development Fund now  available
    • This fund is part of the Boosting Biosecurity Defences through Royalties for Regions

Expressions of interest are now open for a share of $700,000 funding to support research and development projects to better manage biosecurity risks in grains industries in Western Australia.

Agriculture and Food Minister Ken Baston said the State Government was supporting WA's agriculture and food sector through its Biosecurity Research and Development Fund.

"This call for projects is focused on biosecurity research gaps in the prevention and eradication of exotic pests and diseases that impact the State's valuable grains industries," Mr Baston said.

"The grains industry in WA is valued at $5 billion a year at the farm gate, and much of the grain produced is exported, so it's vital the industries are protected from pests and diseases that would affect grains production and the State's access to key target markets."

Expressions of interest are invited for research projects aimed at improving the surveillance for high-risk grains pests; applying systems and tools to predict emerging pests and diseases; and improving community engagement and stakeholder awareness of biosecurity threats.

Funding of up to $350,000 is available to individual projects that will be completed by March 31, 2018.

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the Biosecurity Research and Development Fund was part of the three-year, $20 million Boosting Biosecurity Defences project made possible by the Government's Royalties for Regions program.

"Boosting Biosecurity Defences aims to strengthen the State's biosecurity defences and underpin efforts by industry and  the $300 million Seizing the Opportunity Agriculture initiative to capture a share of growing international demand for agriculture and food," Mr Redman said.

Expressions of interest close at 9am on November 9, 2015.
