    • Seafood Directions 2015 will be held in Perth from October 25-27

This month, Perth will welcome fisheries experts from across Australia and overseas when it hosts a national conference aimed at boosting the future of Australian fishing and aquaculture.

The Western Australian Fishing Industry Council, as the peak industry body in the State, is hosting Seafood Directions 2015, which takes place in Perth from October 25-27.

Fisheries Minister Ken Baston said he was proud the conference was being held in Perth, at a time when WA was embracing its own new strategies to expand opportunities for fishing and aquaculture.

"As a result of the State Government's $14.5 million investment into commercial fisheries management, six fisheries are currently undergoing sustainability certification through the internationally recognised Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) process.  It makes WA the perfect host for this important conference," Mr Baston said.

The Minister said the conference theme of 'Selling our Story' was vital in the push to find more strategies to successfully guide the seafood industry into the future.

"The MSC process is one such story and will help confirm the sustainability of the State's commercial fisheries and make them well placed to respond to retailer and consumer demands for sustainably sourced seafood," he said.

"We need to be part of the new national plan to increase the value of fishing and aquaculture in Australia substantially by 2020, to make it more productive, profitable and environmentally sustainable.

"WA's vast coastline, with its healthy environment, provides a valuable selling point for farming seafood that meets the highest standards for quality and food safety for businesses seeking to benefit from a clean and green image to support premium products.

"This Government's commitment to aquaculture is helping to deliver growth for a strategically important industry and local communities, with one investment-ready development zone already established in the Kimberley and another in preparation off the Mid-West coast."

Mr Baston said WA was working closely on the upcoming conference with the Australian Government's Fisheries Research and Development Corporation.
