    • $93,577 grant to upgrade kitchen and dining facilities at Gilcreek Scout Camp

Youth and community groups will soon enjoy a revamped kitchen and dining facility at a popular campsite 12 kilometres north of the Albany CBD.

Known as the 'Flightdeck', the building at Gilcreek Scout Camp will undergo a $93,577 upgrade courtesy of the State Government's Gaming Community Trust. The grant has been made to Scouts WA, which manages the camp.

Racing and Gaming Minister Colin Holt said the Flightdeck building was in desperate need of renovations.

"At the completion of the works, the facility will provide a safe and clean environment for use by future generations," Mr Holt said.

The grant will be spent upgrading the kitchen and dining facility, including the removal of old, unsafe and unserviceable cladding materials; and recladding the interior and exterior of the building.  New timber doors will also be installed and the current window frames replaced with aluminium for durability.

The Flightdeck was originally constructed at Busselton Airstrip for use during WWII before serving as the departure lounge at Albany Airport until the late 1980s.  It was then transported to its current Norwood Road site.

The Minister said many groups from regional and metropolitan areas, including universities, church and school groups, used the Gilcreek site.

"This upgrade will make the experience of those groups a whole lot more enjoyable," he said.

The renovations will be carried out by J & W Brade of Warrenup.

Scouts WA is a community-based, not-for-profit and registered charitable organisation which has more than 7,500 members.
