- Independent Living Centre opens service in Cockburn Kwinana area
- Introduction of WA's first 'Smart Home' integrated display
People with disability living in Perth's south-west metropolitan corridor can now easily access assistive equipment and technology from the Independent Living Centre's new service in Cockburn.
Officially opening the centre today, Disability Services Minister Helen Morton said automation was making a big difference to a person's ability to remain at home.
The Independent Living Centre has set up Western Australia's first 'Smart Home' display in Cockburn to show people some of the options available.
It demonstrates how appliances, lighting, air conditioning, entertainment, security and camera systems can communicate with each other and be remotely controlled.
The Smart Home is an apartment-style living environment with a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and living and office areas. It allows people to see, trial and experience home smart technology that can be used in everyday life.
Mrs Morton said the Independent Living Centre had been providing services to West Australians for about 40 years.
"The centre provides information and advice to guide people's choices in accessing assistive technology and services for independence and wellbeing," Mrs Morton said.
The Minister said it was timely that the Independent Living Centre should establish a service in Cockburn.
"The centre is an endorsed service provider for the provision of individualised therapy services both in the WA NDIS My Way Lower South West and the Cockburn Kwinana trial sites," she said.
"I imagine a number of WA NDIS My Way trial participants will visit the new premises to find out what is on offer."
The establishment of the service was made possible through $220,000 funding from the Disability Services Commission and $320,000 from the Home and Community Care program.
