    • $33m West Kimberley Transitional Housing Program expands to Broome, Derby

The State Government is calling for eligible people in Broome and Derby to register their interest in a program that will help them build financial independence and develop the skills to move successfully into private rental or home ownership.

The Transitional Housing Program, already operating successfully in the East Kimberley, is being expanded into Broome and Derby.

Housing Minister Colin Holt said the first houses to be built under the program were already under construction and would become available for occupation in October.

"The West Kimberley Transitional Housing Program is an initiative of the Department of Housing and Kimberley Development Commission that provides eligible applicants with a new rental home and access to support services," Mr Holt said.

"In return they must be employed or in training, and if they have children, the children must attend school regularly."

The program will deliver at least 40 houses in Broome and 20 in Derby, all to be completed in stages from October 2015.

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the State Government's Royalties for Regions program was investing $33 million to create a sustainable transitional housing model for Aboriginal communities in the West Kimberley.

"It will encourage program participants to develop independence, enabling improved home ownership opportunities and promoting intergenerational change," Mr Redman said.

"Providing such targeted opportunities will support a better quality of life and contribute to significant economic benefits in regional Western Australia."

The West Kimberley Transitional Housing Program is part of the $70 million Royalties for Regions West Kimberley Revitalisation program that aims to support long-term growth in the region.
