- Marmion Angling and Aquatic Club takes out Club of the Year (large) Award
- Regional clubs and volunteers among those to be recognised
Marmion Angling and Aquatic Club was named the Clubs WA 2015 Club of the Year (large) last night at an event to celebrate the vital role that sporting, social and cultural clubs play in the Western Australian community.
Racing and Gaming Minister Colin Holt congratulated all nominees and winners of the 2015 Clubs WA Awards for Excellence, including Gosnells Football and Sports Club stalwart George Leathley who was recognised with the Lifetime Contribution to Volunteering award.
Mr Holt said the awards were a chance to thank the clubs, and particularly the volunteers who run them, for their hard work, passion and dedication.
"A fair share of the heavy lifting carried out in the club environment is usually done by volunteers and is largely behind the scenes," he said.
"The Clubs WA awards recognise excellence in a number of areas relating to services that clubs offer the local community."
With more than 320,000 people in WA registered as members of a club, the Minister said the organisations were an important piece of the social jigsaw and often at the heart of a thriving community.
"Essentially a healthy club is a reflection of a healthy community," he said.
"I am happy to report that the State Government will continue to work with Clubs WA to ensure all Western Australian clubs have access to services and the support they need to fulfil the expectations of their members."
Mr Holt said he was thrilled to see regional WA so well represented among the nominees, with Dunsborough & Districts Country Club and Kellerberrin and Districts Club winning the small and medium Club of the Year awards respectively.
"At last count, rural areas accounted for about 59 per cent of the total club membership. This is even more impressive when you consider that only 20 per cent of the State's population live in rural and regional areas," he said.
