Kalgoorlie-Boulder Race Round runs from September 20-27
$160,000 prize pool in the XXXX Gold Kalgoorlie Cup
Today marks 90 days until the 119th running of the Kalgoorlie Cup - the exciting climax of Western Australia's largest regional racing carnival.
Racing and Gaming Minister Colin Holt said the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Race Round, running from September 20-27, featured three of the most anticipated days on the West Australian racing calendar - including lead-up events, the Boulder Cup and Hannans Handicap.
Mr Holt said the 2015 XXXX Gold Kalgoorlie Cup would be held on a Sunday this year to coincide with the Queen's Birthday long weekend. The $160,000 prize purse is the largest of all country cups in WA.
"Though traditionally held on a Saturday, the race will command a whole new level of attention from the switch to Sunday as it will not clash with an AFL preliminary final, as it has in recent years," he said.
"The long weekend will give people from Perth and other parts of Western Australia the opportunity to travel to this fantastic event, which will create positive flow-on effects for local businesses."
Since 2010 the State Government has invested more than $800,000 into the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Race Club via the Racecourse Infrastructure Grant Program and Royalties for Regions.
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the upgrades ensured the club was better equipped to host major race days and provided extra amenity for spectators.
"Refurbishing critical infrastructure in race clubs is essential in building their long term sustainability that will benefit regional communities," Mr Redman said.
"I am pleased to see Royalties for Regions investing in the racing industry to contribute to the economic strength of regional Western Australia."
The Kalgoorlie-Boulder Race Round comprises three race days, including the $110,000 Boulder Cup (run this year on Sunday, September 20), the $140,000 TABTouch Hannans Handicap (Thursday, September 24) and the XXXX Gold Kalgoorlie Cup
The Kalgoorlie Cup has been run since 1897
A number of events are held throughout the week of the race round including bush two-up, calcuttas, a cocktail party and pacing events at the Golden Mile Trotting Club
