    Grants tackle problem gambling

    30/06/2015 9:30 AM
    • More than $325,000 to help combat problem gambling

Grants of $199,476 and $130,000 have been awarded to Linkwest and 360 Health + Community respectively to help reduce problem gambling in the community and raise awareness about its social impact.

Racing and Gaming Minister Colin Holt said the initiatives proposed by the two organisations would strengthen the capacity of local groups to fully appreciate the risks of problem gambling in their communities.

"The programs that are being funded will also give alternative options to those who might be at risk of developing a problem gambling habit," Mr Holt said.

Community Services Minister Tony Simpson said problem gambling was best addressed at the grass roots level by dedicated community organisations such as the two most recent grants recipients.

"A particular strength of the Beyond Gambling Grants Program is that it equips these organisations to develop projects that address issues specific to their locality and demographic," Mr Simpson said.

360 Health + Community developed an early prevention and awareness campaign that targets young people and schools in the Peel region and south west metropolitan area. The program includes direct intervention, support for problem gamblers and counsellor training.

The Linkwest project incorporates an awareness campaign, alternative activities to social gambling and training for frontline staff at Linkwest partner centres.  The service delivery locations include Fremantle, Bayswater, Beechboro, Bunbury, South Lake, Langford and Yangebup.
