    • Farmers have until June 30, 2015 to apply for up to $10,000 in grants

Farm and pastoral businesses experiencing financial hardship or trouble servicing debt have until June 30, 2015 to apply for up to $10,000 worth of grants under a State Government scheme aimed at helping them navigate their way through a difficult period.

Agriculture and Food Minister Ken Baston said the number of local government areas eligible to participate in the Farm Business Assessment Scheme was recently extended to 19, stretching from Exmouth in the north through to Yilgarn in the east.

Recent additions include the shires of Koorda, Dalwallinu, Northampton, Mount Marshall, Morawa, Perenjori, Exmouth and the City of Greater Geraldton.

The grants, administered by the Rural Business Development Corporation via the Department of Agriculture and Food, comprise up to $5,000 for independent advice and an initial business assessment and another $5,000 to implement the business assessment.

Access to the Farm Business Assessment Scheme grants has been simplified since the scheme was announced last year and no longer requires the endorsement and/or involvement of a bank in the application process.

Mr Baston said the grants could assist farm and pastoral businesses to address a range of issues.

"Often when businesses find themselves in a difficult financial position it is a challenge for some to take a business-centred approach to find a way forward," he said.

"These grants provide the opportunity to engage an independent, professional third party with a 'fresh set of eyes' to look at the problem and identify a pathway towards a solution.

"This approach could be used in a range of scenarios from debt mediation, to succession planning, to business restructuring and even expansion."
