Wellington Dam water ski area opens

25/02/2014 12:00 AM
  • Water skiing allowed at Wellington Dam from this long weekend
  • Gives water ski enthusiasts an alternative ski location in the South-West

A new water ski area at Wellington Dam will be open in time for the Labour Day long weekend.

Transport Minister Troy Buswell said the creation of the new ski area at Potters Gorge delivered on the State Government’s commitment to increase recreational opportunities at Wellington Dam.

“The ski area will be officially gazetted on February 28, 2014, which means it will be operational over the Labour Day long weekend and I hope enjoyed by many families and water skiing enthusiasts,” Mr Buswell said.

“A lot of care has been taken to determine the best location for the ski area and to ensure Wellington Dam is safe for everyone to use. The skiing boundary will be clearly marked with yellow buoys and signage will be available on site to guide users.”

The Department of Transport has carried out a comprehensive review of the skiing area, including two hydrographic surveys and a study of dam water levels to determine the best location for user safety.

Skippers should note that the majority of the dam remains closed to motorised vessels and there is a 200m exclusion zone to all vessels from the dam wall.  In addition, a five-knot speed limit applies from the launching ramp and for waters around the ski area north of the southern boundary.

Freestyle driving of personal water craft, also called jet skis, is prohibited on all waters of Wellington Dam.

Department of Transport marine compliance officers will be patrolling the area.

Last year the Government announced significant changes to by-laws allowing boating activity on Wellington Dam.

The Minister said he expected the new ski area to be popular with locals and provide an alternative ski destination for locals and for those visiting the region.
