- First of the iconic London taxis start operating in Perth today
The taxis offer improved accessibility and safety features
A four-year trial of 100 purpose-built taxis is among State Government initiatives to improve security, standards and availability in the taxi industry
There is a new-look taxi in Perth today, with the first London taxi hitting the streets.
Transport Minister Troy Buswell said the new taxis were part of a trial to improve the security, standards and availability of Perth taxis.
“At a time when people increasingly rely on taxi services to travel around our city, this purpose-built cab will be a welcome sight on the streets of Perth this festive season,” Mr Buswell said.
“The London Taxi Company’s TX4 vehicle operates in more than 30 countries around the world, it can carry up to five passengers and includes a safety screen.”
The Minister said the taxis would be driven by local drivers.
“This trial is an exciting opportunity for our local taxi drivers and the vehicles will provide both taxi drivers and passengers with a safe journey,” he said.
The TX4 also offers other improved accessibility features - including an induction hearing loop, high-visibility markers for the visually impaired and a swivel seat for passengers with mobility issues.
The first drivers to take part in the trial have undergone vehicle familiarisation training and the Department of Transport is currently assessing the second round of driver applications.
All drivers have been accredited through the Department of Transport.
The vehicles are owned and operated by a private operator and have undergone local accreditation processes, which includes being fitted with new state-of-the-art Taxi Camera Surveillance Units.
50 London taxis will participate in a four-year trial of purpose-built taxis
Benefits of the purpose-built taxis will be evaluated through consumer, driver and operator feedback, as well as operating costs and taxi safety statistics
