    • Festival of the Pearl secures State Government funding for two years
    • Supported by Eventscorp’s Regional Events Program, funded by Royalties for Regions

Broome is set to shine this weekend as the Shinju Matsuri Festival of the Pearl gets under way.

The event will be held from September 13-22 following today’s announcement that the State Government had also secured funding for the festival for 2014.

Tourism Minister Liza Harvey said the Shinju Matsuri Festival, now in its 43rd year, had been supported by the State Government since 2008.

“Shinju Matsuri celebrates Broome’s pearling history, extraordinary landscapes and cultural diversity,” Mrs Harvey said.

“Thousands of people are expected for the festival, which will boost the town’s local economy, add vibrancy and encourage people to further explore the greater Kimberley region.”

The event is supported by the Government through Eventscorp’s Regional Events Program, which is funded by Royalties for Regions.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said other events included a long-table lunch, an art exhibition, a float parade, Mardi Gras concert and a street carnival.

“Broome is such a vibrant and exciting place and the Shinju Matsuri Festival provides a further opportunity for the community to come together in celebration and to show off their town to visitors,” Mr Grylls said.
