- Belmont Park Station to close at end of 2013 race season
To be replaced with Stadium Station, which will service the new Perth Stadium when it opens in 2018
Stadium Station to feature three island platforms to move 28,000 people by train within one hour of completion of an event
Belmont Park Station will close at the end of the 2013 winter racing season to allow work to begin on the new station that will service the world-class Perth Stadium.
Acting Transport Minister Mike Nahan said the existing special events station would be closed from October 13.
“This is a significant step toward establishing the public transport infrastructure that will enable tens of thousands of fans to enjoy this excellent new venue when it opens in 2018,” Dr Nahan said.
A new six-platform station will replace Belmont Park Station and will be completed in time for the opening of the new Perth Stadium in 2018.
The Liberal National Government last year unveiled details of the bus-train-road-pedestrian plan for the Perth Stadium, which will transport an estimated 50,000 people from the stadium precinct within an hour of an event ending.
The new transport networks will be designed around the same ‘fan first’ philosophy that has driven the development of the stadium. The design will reflect passenger behaviour, with 28,000 people expected to use the six-platform stadium station.
“Stadium Station will feature three island platforms to move passengers to and from the venue in the most efficient way possible,” Dr Nahan said.
Belmont Park Station is a special events station which operates only on race days and other planned events. The closure of the station will not affect other services operating on the Armadale/Thornlie line, which will skip Belmont Park Station and continue to Burswood.
