Newly crowned Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli and world number eight Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are set to join to the long list of stars showcasing their talents at Perth Arena.
The French team is the first announced for the 2014 Hyundai Hopman Cup - the second Hopman Cup to be held at Perth Arena.
Tourism Minister Kim Hames said the top ten pair showed that the international mixed teams tournament was continuing to grow at its new home.
Dr Hames said the Hopman Cup was a home-grown WA sporting and tourism event - with State Government sponsorship, through Eventscorp, as a founding sponsor.
“The fact that we have been able to attract the current women’s Wimbledon champion and the world men’s number eight ranked player shows that the competition is going from strength to strength at Perth Arena,” he said.
“In its first year at Perth Arena, the 2013 tournament set a new record with a total attendance of more than 104,000 people - an increase of 27 per cent on the previous year.”
Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron said Perth Arena provided WA with a world class venue for major sporting and entertainment events.
“The Hopman Cup is one of 64 major public events that have been held at Perth Arena since it opened in November last year,” Mr Waldron said.
“We’ve already seen 555,000 people pass through the doors of Perth Arena with many more major events, including the 2014 Hopman Cup, to come.
“The opening five weeks of the venue saw 17 events performed, and during just one week in March alone, Perth Arena hosted six events in nine days.
“There have been so many diverse shows at the Perth Arena - from rock concerts like Pink to comedians, the Hopman Cup, netball games and of course, the Perth Wildcats.
“Coming up we still have some huge names like One Direction, Rihanna, Andre Rieu, Fleetwood Mac, professional wrestling and Disney on Ice. The range of acts shows just how diverse and flexible the Perth Arena can be.”
