The State Government this morning honoured more than 100 volunteers from the sport and recreation sector for their commitment to the community.

Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron paid tribute to volunteers from a variety of fields during a Department of Sport and Recreation breakfast at Patersons Stadium, coinciding with National Volunteer Week.

Mr Waldron said there were an estimated 1.5 million adult volunteers across Australia.

“It is estimated that each volunteer saves the community $1,554 each year - in Western Australia, volunteers contribute about $322million in time and expertise,” the Minister said.

“Every sporting club and recreation group in every community, regardless of whether it be in the cities or the State’s most remote regions, have local heroes who give of their time and expertise.

“I like to think, even as a young kid, that I appreciated and acknowledged the help they gave me and others.

“As we grow older we get to appreciate even more the role those people played, not only in coaching sports, but in teaching us the life skills associated with living within a community.”
