The State Government has formally acknowledged Western Australia’s strong cultural diversity and its importance to all its people.
Citizenship and Multicultural Interests Minister John Castrilli today released the Government’s Cultural Diversity Statement, which supports and promotes cultural diversity as one of the State’s greatest assets.
“Throughout our history, WA has been enriched and enhanced by people from diverse cultures,” Mr Castrilli said.
“The Cultural Diversity Statement adds to the awareness and value of WA as a State enriched by our multicultural population and the latent opportunities this diversity provides.
“WA is seen nationally and internationally as a place of opportunity for all people, providing a harmonious environment that respects differing points of views and cultural differences.
“This State has people from more than 200 nationalities, practicing more than 100 faiths and speaking 270 languages.”
The Minister also released a research paper into the Economic and Social Contribution of Migrants to Western Australia. The paper was commissioned by the Government to increase community awareness of the benefits that migrants bring to WA.
The report identified:
the international education sector alone contributes $795million to the WA economy
migrants provide net fiscal contribution of $355million to WA’s economy in their first year of settlement
about 40 per cent of WA small businesses are owned and operated by migrants.
Mr Castrilli said the Government was proud to formally recognise the contributions made by many thousands of people from diverse cultures across many decades to make our great State what it is today.
