Young WA carers let rip at SciTech

    • Young carers to take time out tonight with exclusive access to SciTech
    • Carers Week marked with young carer family event at SciTech

About 300 young carers and their families will take time out from their responsibilities tonight and have free-run of SciTech’s exhibits and live shows, as part of the 2012 Carers Week.

Community Services Minister Robyn McSweeney hoped the free event, funded by the Department for Communities, would give respite to some of Western Australia’s most valued community members.

“Today’s event is a great way for young carers to take time out from responsibility and have fun, while raising awareness of young carers in this State,” Mrs McSweeney said.

“Being a young carer is a demanding job that often means juggling education, work and caring commitments.  I hope our young carers enjoy tonight’s event, given in their honour.”

The State Government recently announced a one-off funding of $150,000 to Carers WA to raise awareness of carers issues, in addition to the $700,000 already committed to the organisation until 2015.

The Minister commended Carers WA for working to support WA’s 40,000 young carers.
