  • Other winners include businesses operating in the pharmaceutical, wine, training, subsea and mining technology sectors

Western Areas NL, a nickel miner based in West Perth, has taken top honours at the 2012 WA Industry and Export Awards.

Commerce Minister Simon O’Brien said Western Areas NL was a Western Australian success story, growing from a small exploration company to become Australia’s third-biggest nickel producer.

“The Industry and Export Awards honour the success of Western Australian businesses and acknowledge their contribution to our State’s economic and social development,” Mr O’Brien said.

“Since listing on the ASX, Western Areas NL has dealt with a nickel price ranging from US$3.00 to US$23.00 a pound. Despite this fluctuation the company has raised $330million in development capital, commissioned two mines, and built, then expanded, its concentrator facility.

“Western Areas also moved more than 120,000 tonnes of nickel concentrate through the Esperance Port during 2011-12.”

The Minister said the diverse industry sectors honoured at this year’s awards recognised WA’s unique strengths and the talented individuals located in the State.

“This year’s winners include a clinical trials laboratory; two suppliers to the pharmaceutical industry; a vineyard; and a number of companies developing technologies for the resources industry,” he said.

“The diversity is outstanding and is evidence of the State’s unique landscape and capacity for innovation.  I would like to congratulate Western Areas NL and all of this year’s WA Industry and Export Award winners.”

Winners of the State Export Award categories will automatically progress as finalists to the 50th Australian Export Awards.  National winners will be announced in Canberra on Tuesday November 27, 2012.
