- $80,000 to help young mothers into educational programs
- Peel Youth Services program called Eyes Wide Open
Teenage mothers in the Peel region will benefit from $80,000 presented by Youth Minister Robyn McSweeney today for education and mentoring services.
The Minister presented the funding to Peel Youth Services which will run the Eyes Wide Open leadership program.
The program offers pregnant and teen mothers access to TAFE qualifications as well as counselling and parenting advice.
“Teen mothers face many obstacles when trying to continue their education so it is important that programs such as this one exist and they are supported and funded,” Mrs McSweeney said.
“Parenting, at any age, can be a rewarding yet incredibly challenging experience. Peel Youth Services are meeting the needs of young mums while also creating young leaders and this will have a positive flow on effect to the community.”
The Eyes Wide Open program also focuses on early intervention strategies to reduce the level of teen pregnancy in the community.
- Earlier this year, the State Government released its youth framework titled Our Youth, Our Future
- The Eyes Wide Open leadership program provides access to education and support for teen mothers to enable them to become young leaders in their community
