Sunday shopping an injection for WA economy

    • Historic start to Perth metro-wide Sunday trading
    • Increased sales and greater employment predicted for retail industry
Perth’s new Sunday trading hours will inject vigour into the Western Australian retail sector and the State’s economy generally, Premier and State Development Minister Colin Barnett said today.

Welcoming a historic new era in WA shopping starting today, Mr Barnett said Sunday trading would not only be a huge boon to busy families, studies had shown sales and employment would be boosted by reducing trading restrictions.

“Reports by the Productivity Commission and The University of Western Australia both concluded that employment opportunities will be created by increasing trading hours and bricks and mortar retailers will also be able to compete more effectively with their online competitors,” he said.

“The reports also conclude restrictions on trading hours are anti-competitive and easing those restrictions tends to lead to higher retail sales and volumes.  Perth retailers can now compete fairly and equally in the marketplace while consumers will enjoy greater convenience and choice.”

Commerce Minister Simon O’Brien said the State Government’s actions in initially expanding special trading precincts, then introducing late night weekday and now Sunday trading had received strong community support.

“The Government is keeping in step with community demands and expectations by giving consumers in Perth a greater opportunity to shop whenever and wherever they like,” Mr O’Brien said.

“This Government has spearheaded the campaign to reform retail trading hours in WA to make them consistent with busy lifestyles in a modern economy.”

Mr O’Brien said from today, the special holiday resort precincts of Rockingham and Wanneroo (Yanchep/Two Rocks), granted extended trading hours in the 1970s, would also come into line with other retailers in the Perth metropolitan area.
