    • Sport and recreation recognised for its contribution to creating safer environments for kids in WA communities

A proactive approach to creating child-safe environments within Western Australia’s sport and recreation industry has won the highest recognition at the inaugural Constable Care Child Safety Awards 2012.

Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron congratulated the WA Sports Federation (WASF) and the other Safe Clubs 4 Kids project partners on winning the Constable Care Child Safety Award of the Year 2012.

“This collaborative approach to child safety is truly deserving of this award and is yet another example of sport and recreation taking the lead in important issues affecting our society,” Mr Waldron said.

Safe Clubs 4 Kids also won with the Western Australian Community Program and Partnership Award (Metropolitan), which recognises a WA community group that has made an outstanding contribution to child safety in the metropolitan area.

Child Protection Minister Robyn McSweeney said Safe Clubs 4 Kids was creating safer WA communities.

“Through collaboration between WASF, the Department of Sport and Recreation, the Working with Children Screening Unit, the WA Police Child Abuse Squad and Surf Life Saving WA, child safeguarding practices become a normal part of club business,” Mrs McSweeney said.

Funded by the Department of Sport and Recreation, Safe Clubs 4 Kids provides information, resources and training to the sport and active recreation industry about how to create child-safe environments.

“The Safe Clubs 4 Kids program is a valuable initiative that helps to ensure the safety of children, our most precious resource, in the Western Australian community,” His Excellency Malcolm McCusker AC CVO QC, Governor of Western Australia said. “These awards are well-deserved recognition of the important role played by these child safety programs.”
