    • Police, child protection and court facilities for Aboriginal community

The police response time to incidents within the Aboriginal community of Looma will be reduced from hours to minutes thanks to a new Multi-Functional Policing Facility (MFPF) officially opened today by Police Minister Rob Johnson.

The facility is fully equipped to respond to all policing tasks and emergency situations and will be staffed by two police officers and a community child protection officer from the Department for Child Protection (DCP).

Mr Johnson said the Looma police sub-district would service an area of 32,973 square kilometres with a total population of about 1,500 people.

“This facility will provide much-needed police and community services to the Mangala, Nyikina and Walmajarri people,” he said.

“Services provided by WA Police and DCP will enhance the security of the district and lead to significant improvements in police response times, resulting in better outcomes for the health and safety of local residents.

“As the police officers will be working and living directly with the people, they will have the opportunity to establish positive and trusting relationships with the community, particularly with the younger generation.

“By providing local services to Looma and surrounding areas, the State Government’s commitment to improving the conditions and sustainability of remote Aboriginal communities can be achieved.”

The Looma facility joins the Blackstone and Burringurrah MFPFs as the third in a series jointly funded by the State and Federal governments.
