    Local engineers win major contract

    • $15.5billion contracts go to local companies

Today in State Parliament, Commerce Minister Simon O’Brien announced that WorleyParsons had recently won a contract to provide front end engineering services for Hess’s prospective Equus offshore gas project.

The multi-million dollar contract adds to the billions of dollars of contracts awarded to local companies since July 2011.

“Last July, I announced a 10-point plan to maximise the amount of work local businesses win from major resource projects.  Since that time, more than $15.5billion worth of resource contracts have been won by local fabricators, local software companies, local caterers, local medical providers, local transport companies and local logistic firms amongst others,” Mr O’Brien said.

“At its core what this means is jobs for West Australians.  A few weeks ago I visited RCR Tomlinson, a company that had just won a $600million contract from Fortescue Metals Group for fabrication work done in this State.

“This contract will result in more than 500 jobs and outcomes like this are why WA has Australia’s lowest unemployment rate.

“We are already achieving more than 80 per cent local content on onshore resource projects, but work still needs to be done on offshore projects. Two weeks ago I announced a new initiative to focus on the potential for the local engineering and design industry to become more involved in the early phases of offshore energy development.

“The Liberal-National Government believes the capabilities of WA’s engineering and design industry is internationally competitive and has the capacity to work on major energy projects.

“In this context I am very happy to say that Hess has confirmed that this contract was won because of the demonstrated high level technical expertise of Western Australian engineers.

“And again I emphasise the fact that if we are successful in winning engineering work, the flow on will be more wins for our fabricator. This is simply because our engineers are familiar with the expertise of our companies and workers - it’s a win-win situation.”
