    • Revamped school recalls 150 years of local history
    • State Government funded works worth $2.3million
The merging of two Claremont primary schools under a new name has revived memories of 150 years of Western Australian history with today’s opening of Freshwater Bay Primary School.

Premier Colin Barnett officially opened with Education Minister Liz Constable, $2.3million worth of works on the former Claremont Primary School’s heritage buildings and school grounds in Bay View Terrace.

The works were carried out after the amalgamation of Claremont and nearby East Claremont primary schools last year with the new school being renamed Freshwater Bay, honouring a school of that name, also referred to as Mrs Herbert’s School, which operated from 1862-79.

“Opening these facilities represents the old meeting the new,” Mr Barnett said.

“The name Freshwater Bay Primary School recalls a non-Government school where students in this area were taught 150 years ago.”

The revamped school is named after a historic building that housed students until 1879, reopening at another site in 1882.  Claremont Primary School opened at the current site in 1893.

Dr Constable said the new spaces and facilities would enhance teaching and learning for staff and students.

“The renovated administration area features a waiting room, reception, staff offices, communications rooms, secure store room and a medical room,” Dr Constable said.

“The vision and efforts of all those involved in the amalgamation means students can reach their full potential in a high-quality school environment.”

Principal Stephen Ivey said staff were delighted to move to the new campus after working at two sites last year.
