Appointment of CCC Commissioner

  • Former District Court Judge Roger Macknay QC appointed CCC Commissioner
  • Appointed to a five-year term
  • Delivering accountability and confidence in WA’s justice system

Premier Colin Barnett and Attorney General Christian Porter today announced that retired judge and eminent legal professional Roger Macknay QC has been appointed as the Western Australian Corruption and Crime Commissioner.

Mr Barnett said Mr Macknay was well qualified for the role and would bring a great deal of knowledge and experience to WA’s corruption and crime watchdog.

“Mr Macknay is a very experienced lawyer who practised as a barrister for more than 20 years before his appointment as a Judge of the District Court of Western Australia,” he said.

“He comes with high recommendation and has displayed a very keen appreciation of fairness and justice during his time on the bench.

“Since forming Government in 2008, the Liberal-National Government has introduced a number of accountability reforms.

“We have established an independent Public Sector Commission with a commissioner; appointed a new Freedom of Information commissioner; and last week introduced lobbyist legislation to make the activities of paid lobbyists more transparent and accountable.”

Mr Porter said the Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC) was vital in ensuring confidence was maintained in WA’s justice system and the appointment of Mr Macknay had come after an extensive selection process.

“Mr Macknay’s appointment has been made by the Governor on the Premier’s recommendation, with bipartisan support of the members of the Joint Standing Committee on the Corruption and Crime Commission.  He was chosen from a list of eligible candidates submitted by the nominating committee comprising the Chief Justice, the Chief Judge of the District Court and a community representative,” Mr Porter said.

“I am confident Mr Macknay, through the CCC, will deliver the important level of accountability and confidence, ensuring corruption and serious crime in WA won’t go undetected.”
