    Gala concert celebrates Commonwealth talent

    • Key part of the Commonwealth Festival being held during CHOGM 2011

    The West Australian Symphony Orchestra will join conductor Brad Cohen and award-winning soloists for tonight’s Commonwealth Festival Gala Concert.


    Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said the Perth Concert Hall performance would feature talented soloists, Amy Dickson and Yelian He and Australian composer Graeme Koehne.


    “The Commonwealth Festival Gala Concert is an opportunity to hear some of the Commonwealth’s most exciting musicians,” Mr Day said.


    “Ms Dickson has performed in Europe, Africa and Australasia at venues such as the Wigmore Hall and the Sydney Opera House as well as giving solo performances with orchestras such as the Vienna Chamber Orchestra.


    “Yelian He was born in China in 1984 and began his musical studies on the cello at the age of five and has been invited to perform in many countries including Italy, the United Kingdom, Zimbabwe, Singapore, Taiwan, China, Malaysia and Australia.


    “Joining these performers will be South African diva Pauline Malefane, fresh from her starring role in The Magic Flute at the Melbourne Festival where she performed her ground-breaking interpretations of opera classics from an African perspective.”

    • Jonathan Dove: Airport Scenes
    • Mozart: Mi tradi quell’alma ingrata from Don Giovanni with Pauline Malefane.
    • African traditional with Pauline Malefane. Based on a Xhosa traditional song
    • Haydn: Cello Concerto No.2 with Yelian He
    • James Ledger: Indian Pacific
    • Graeme Koehne: Inflight Entertainment (WA Premiere) with Amy Dickson
    • Bernstein: Somewhere from West Side Story with Pauline Malefane.
