Planning Minister John Day has approved amendments to the Greater Bunbury Region Scheme which is the first step in the process for the proposed development of the Bunbury waterfront project.

The Governor has approved the Region Scheme Amendments and the Minister will soon formally table them in State Parliament.

“The amendments rezone portions of land, waterway and railway in the areas known as Marlston North and Koombana North to Regional Centre zoning allowing detailed planning by the City of Bunbury and LandCorp for the area's development to proceed,” Mr Day said.

“In October 2009, the Bunbury Waterfront Taskforce released its recommendations and identified the three sites to be rezoned by the Western Australian Planning Commission, Marlston North; Koombana North and Koombana South.

“The proposed amendment for Koombana South has subsequently been withdrawn following the public consultation process and the taskforce and the City of Bunbury will now revisit master planning for the Koombana South site which will ensure the best outcome and land use for that area.”

The proposed amendments for Marlston North and Koombana North will allow for intensified mixed-use development, with a diverse range of housing, employment and social opportunities.

The Minister said the development of the project would be a collaborative effort.

“LandCorp will work with the City of Bunbury to progress plans for the Bunbury Waterfront project, subject to State Government approval, with the new development plan for Stage One incorporating the outcome of the Greater Bunbury Regional Scheme amendment,” he said.

“The public consultation period saw more than 400 submissions received for the Marlston North and Koombana North proposals with the majority of the community supporting the amendments.

“These amendments put in place the zoning required for the development of Western Australia’s largest city outside the Perth and Peel region.”
