Mental Health Minister Graham Jacobs today announced a $910,000 pool for scholarships to equip mental health workers in Western Australia.
Dr Jacobs said the new Mental Health Commission would offer 70 scholarships to mental health nurses or clinicians wishing to complete a graduate certificate in mental health.
“The scholarships cover the $13,000 cost of course fees and are available to mental health professionals in the public, non-government and private sectors,” he said.
“Rural and remote professionals can take advantage of the scholarships through appropriate online training.”
The Minister said the scholarships would support workforce development in WA.
“The State Government is aiming to provide WA with the best mental health workforce,” he said.
“To do this we need to provide our mental health workers with opportunities to enhance their knowledge and skills.
“By increasing the opportunities for professional development, we can support the men and women who keep our mental health services running.
“These scholarships will also help the State retain its much-needed workforce.
“Nurses and other clinicians will find this a stepping stone to higher learning.
“A skilled and knowledgeable workforce means improved services and better recovery outcomes.”
A total of 35 scholarships are available each year for 2011 and 2012 for study at a Western Australian university.
Applications for 2011 close December 30, 2010. Application forms are available from the Mental Health Commission at http://www.mentalhealth.wa.gov.au/Initiatives_and_Projects/scholarships.aspx or 6272 1200.
