Community safety in the shires of Mt Magnet and Sandstone will be boosted, with work beginning soon to build a new $8.2million police station in Mt Magnet.

Police Minister Rob Johnson today visited the existing station at Richardson Street, which will be the site for the new facility to accommodate seven police personnel.

Mr Johnson said the new station would be built in stages, with Stage 1 involving the demolition of the former officer-in-charge house in order for construction to begin.

The original facility is old and was not designed to properly accommodate the current numbers of police officers and staff,” he said.

The new station will be a significant improvement, custom-built for modern policing.

“It will include office areas; a dedicated electronic interview room; gymnasium; storage facilities; and an operations room and district training facility.

“The police officers at Mt Magnet do a tremendous job in the community and actively engage with young people by organising football training and other recreational activities, as well as delivering road safety lectures to schools and local groups.

“They deserve to work in purpose-built, modern facilities to allow them to better carry out their duties in preventing and responding to crime in this district.”

The Minister said the State Government was determined to upgrade equipment to police officers working in regional WA and had allocated $80million through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program in this year’s Budget towards improving communications for regional emergency services.

“The upgrade will improve police response times through the capability to dispatch the best-positioned  officers to respond rapidly to emergency calls, as well as boost officer security through vehicle location tracking and encrypted voice communications,” he said.

The new Mt Magnet Police Station is expected to open in December 2011.
