Albany Health Campus - contract awarded

The new $166million Albany Health Campus today marked another important milestone with John Holland Pty Ltd awarded the contract for the first stage of design and construction.

Health Minister Kim Hames said he was delighted building was on track for a 2012 finish, with the awarding of the Stage One early contractor involvement (ECI)  to the company.

“John Holland was selected from a strong field of candidates to develop the design of the new hospital, which will be the regional resource centre for health services in the Great Southern and serve more than 50,000 people in the region,” Dr Hames said.

“I am delighted the project is on schedule to meet this important election promise.

“John Holland will work in close collaboration with the State’s project team, health services user groups and other key stakeholders to finalise master planning before developing the design.

This collaborative approach allows the State and contractor to work together in the early stages of project planning, which will produce the best possible design and understanding of the construction issues.”

The Minister said John Holland would start design work immediately, with a series of stakeholder workshops to be held next week initiating the development process.

“The Stage One ECI contract will see the design developed to the point where a firm lump sum price will be offered to the State,” he said.

The State Government can then choose to take up this offer, or separately tender the project and retain the rights to make use of the initial design.

“This is an efficient contracting model, enabling projects to progress quickly to the construction stage.

“With awarding of the Stage One contract ahead of schedule, we are well placed to meet our early 2011 target for building to start.”

The new Albany Health Campus will feature an improved and expanded range of services that include a bigger emergency department; more mental health beds; expanded renal dialysis capability; expanded cancer services; a new surgical centre; and upgraded obstetric and birthing suites.

Construction will take place while the existing Albany Hospital remains open, so the contractor will be required to work with the State to ensure minimal disruption.
