State Government and Lifeline announce suicideTALK forums across WA

    22/04/2010 12:00 AM

The Liberal-National Government and Lifeline WA are continuing with a campaign to help families learn about what they can do to help prevent people they know who might be at risk of suicide.

Mental Health Minister Graham Jacobs today announced the location of a series of  ground-breaking forums that would help educate, as well as aid, in breaking down the stigma of suicide in the community.

The State Government, through the Mental Health Commission, has provided funding of up to $40,000 to Lifeline WA’s ‘suicideTALK’ program to hold these forums across Western Australia.

The first ‘suicideTALK’ forum will be at the Harold King Centre, Armadale from 6.15pm to 8.30pm on April 28.

Lifeline WA will then hold ‘suicideTALK’ forums at:

    ·           Herb Graham Centre, Mirrabooka from 6.15pm to 8.30pm on April 29

    ·           Katanning Library from 6.15pm to 8.30pm on May 4 and 10am to noon on May 5

    ·           Toodyay Community Resource Centre from 6.15pm to 8.30pm on May 20

    ·           Broome, June 1-2.  Details to be available on Lifeline website at later date.

Dr Jacobs said that every day about seven Australians committed suicide and, for every person lost to suicide, there were about 30 others who had made an attempt.

“On average there are 238 deaths by suicide each year in WA - that’s 23 per cent higher than the deaths caused on our roads,” he said.

“These forums will provide an arena to discuss openly how communities can reduce suicides in WA.

“It is also an opportunity to ask questions to mental health experts about suicide prevention.

“I would like to thank Channel 10 and The West Australian for their support of the ‘suicideTALK’ forums.”

The Minister said in addition to establishing WA’s first Mental Health Commission, the support for these forums and the Suicide Prevention Strategy showed the Government’s determination to help people in need.
