Spearwood infill sewerage works another step closer

Water Minister Graham Jacobs today announced work would soon start on new infill sewerage projects to provide reticulated sewerage to 750 properties in Spearwood.

“The State Government takes the environment and health of Western Australians very seriously and in November last year, the Water Corporation re-prioritised funds so infill works in Spearwood could begin,” Dr Jacobs said.

“The projects, which involve the laying of 16,000m of sewer pipes and the installation of a new pump station, will see houses and businesses able to connect to the wastewater system.”

Homeowners would be provided with full details of the projects and subsequently notified as construction work approached their street.

“Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to gardens, street verges and access to roads and houses,” the Minister said.

Dr Jacobs said questions needed to be asked about the priorities of the previous Labor government.

“While WA was going through some of the best economic times, Labor slashed the infill sewerage program.  Many areas without infill sewerage today could have had work started on them,” he said.

“As the State’s economic outlook improves, future priorities for infill sewerage projects will be looked at in the course of the State Budget process.”

Contracts had been awarded to Rob Carr Pty Ltd and A & E Contracting Pty Ltd. Work was expected to take up to 18 months and cost about $10.5million.
