Workers’ accommodation in hand in Kununurra

    5/12/2009 1:00 AM

The State Government is ensuring an ongoing supply of workers’ accommodation in Kununurra with the release of a tender for a 250-person camp and the arrival of the first accommodation units to cater for 100 workers.

The camp would house workers employed on the State Government’s $220million Ord-East Kimberley Expansion Project and be built  on Victoria Highway, about 1.5km from Kununurra.

Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said a proponent was being sought to supply and operate the workers’ accommodation, maximise indigenous training and employment and investigate opportunities for local businesses in the day-to-day running and maintenance of the camp.

“Ensuring this accommodation is fully operational by the time the main contractor starts work next May is a key priority for the Government,” Mr Grylls said.

“This approach will help ensure normal caravan park and motel accommodation is available during the peak season for tourists and business and is not taken up by project contractors.

“We are working with the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley and the Miriuwung Gajerrong Corporation, who hold a lease over the land, to ensure the site and infrastructure provided for the camp can be used to benefit the community after the project is completed.”

Project director Peter Stubbs said the camp had already been given a head start with the Department of Regional Development and Lands purchasing accommodation units for 100 workers from the Pillara mine near Fitzroy Crossing.

“Due to the tight time frames associated with this project, we wanted to ensure adequate accommodation will be available early next year,” he said.

“The opportunity to purchase these units was taken to guarantee a supply of beds for the first 100 workers expected in May 2010, which will then be supplemented by additional accommodation supplied through the tender process.”

Mr Stubbs said contractors from the Wanna Work indigenous labour hire business were on site near Fitzroy Crossing preparing the accommodation for transport.

The units would be delivered to Kununurra over the next few weeks before being refurbished locally and installed on site early next year.

Tender documents will be available from Monday, December 7, 2009 from http://www.landcorp.com.au/ordexpansionproject  The tender closes on Tuesday, January 12, 2010.  For further information contact Hilary Woodley on 9192 6557.
