      <title>Broome police complex opens</title>

      <title>Anti-hoon laws advertising campaign begins</title>

<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"> </span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">Police Minister John Kobelke today launched a television and print advertising campaign to coincide with the introduction of amendments to the State’s anti-hoon laws and reckless driving penalties.</span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"> </span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">Mr Kobelke said the Road Traffic Amendment Bill 2008, which increased the period police may impound a vehicle involved in a hooning offence, was an important initiative in the Government’s crackdown on hoons and reckless driving.</span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"> </span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">“Since our anti-hoon laws were introduced in 2004, more than 2,800 drivers have been removed for acting recklessly on our roads for the safety of the public,” Mr Kobelke said.</span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"> </span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">“The latest statistics indicate that male drivers are the biggest offenders, with two-thirds of hoons being caught belonging to the 17 to 25-year-old age bracket.</span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"> </span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">“That is a worrying trend, especially as young people are over-represented in the State’s road toll.</span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"> </span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">“What may appear to be a brief moment of fun for some can lead to life-long and potentially fatal consequences.</span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"> </span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">“These new amendments to the Bill will strengthen the deterrent to those who continually flout the law and drive recklesslessly, endangering their own lives as well as the lives of innocent people.”</span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"> </span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">So far in 2008, 802 vehicles have been impounded for 48 hours. Under the new laws passed in June, the period for a first offence will increase from 48 hours to seven days.</span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"> </span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">For a second and subsequent offence, police may impound a vehicle for 28 days, with the opportunity of applying to the courts for a permanent confiscation of the vehicle.</span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"> </span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">Additionally, the possible court imposed fines for reckless driving will increase from $1,000 to $2,000 for a first offence, from $1,200 to $3,000 for a second offence and from $2,400 to $4,000 for any subsequent offence. </span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"> </span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">The Minister said the legislation had also expanded the definition of road rage circumstances so that events that occur on places other than a road, such as private property or carparks were included.</span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"> </span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">“When the State Government announced its intention to crack down on hoons in February, we stated that we were aiming for the legislation to come into effect by August and we have successfully met that target,” he said.</span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"> </span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt;tab-stops:49.65pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">“Labor is tough on hoons and will make sure that hoons lose their cars for longer.”</span></p>

      <title>WA fire crews to assist with Californian fires</title>

<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"></span> </p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">Emergency Services Minister John Kobelke said the WA crew was part of a 44-strong Australia-New Zealand contingent that had been called on to provide relief to American fire crews.</span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"></span> </p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">Mr Kobelke said the officers would serve in a variety of key management roles, including divisional commander, task force leader, helicopter manager and field liaison officer.</span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"></span> </p>

<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">“This is the fifth deployment of ANZ fire leaders to the US since the first 50-strong contingent assisted with the US fires in 2000,” he said.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"><span> </span>“Our local fire crews are experienced in these types of situations, particularly after last year’s fire season in WA, in which a bushfire emergency period was declared as hundreds of bushfires raged across the State.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">More than 300 fires are continuing to burn in California across more than 280,000ha. Rising temperatures and lightning strikes have been forecast for next week.</span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"></span> </p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">The WA team, who will fly to the US today, will be based in California for the next five weeks and will work on two rotations of 14 days each, with two-day breaks in between.</span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"></span> </p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">The Minister said WA fire officers who had taken part in previous deployments in other jurisdictions had benefitted from the experience.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">&quot;Our fire managers have the opportunity to practise their skills in a major incident working with experienced fire fighters in other States and countries, and this enhances their skills when they return home and tackle fires here in WA,” he said.</span></p>

      <title>State Government provides medical benefits for former police</title>

<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">Western Australia Police officers will be able to access medical benefits for ongoing work-related conditions after leaving the police service, under new laws that have been finalised.</span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"> </span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">Police and Emergency Services Minister John Kobelke said the legislation, which was being introduced in the next few weeks as a priority, would remove the anomaly of police officers leaving WA Police with work-related injuries and illnesses without any recognition to meet the costs of their ongoing medical treatment.</span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"> </span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">Currently police are not entitled to recover these or other related expenses.</span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"> </span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">The Minister said it was estimated that several hundred former officers might be eligible for the scheme.</span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"> </span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">“Police officers in WA are covered for both work and non-work related medical costs and are not covered by workers’ compensation,” he said.</span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'"> </span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">“We will now provide specified post-separation medical benefits to police officers who have already left, or may in the future leave WA Police due to work-related injury or illness.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">“This was an issue vigorously pursued by the Western Australia Police Union and I’m pleased that we have been able to provide a good outcome for police officers.”</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'">Deputy Premier Eric Ripper congratulated the 64 new police officers on the completion of their training course and thanked them for their commitment to serving Western Australia.</span></p>
